A medical evacuation became imperative. The administration of Joe Biden announced on Tuesday evening that it had evacuated to an American hospital in Memphis, in the state of Tennessee (southeast of the country), four Ukrainian children whose cancer treatment was ‘made impossible’ by the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
“Children are among the most vulnerable in a crisis,” US Foreign Minister Antony Blinken said in announcing the evacuation in a tweet on Tuesday along with photos of some of them. The official stating that the young children needed ‘urgent and highly specialized treatment’.
According to the US State Department (equivalent to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in France), all the families had been evacuated from Ukraine to Poland. These were transported on Monday to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital of Memphis, Tennessee.
The American administration explains that these medical transfers were made necessary when reception capacities in Europe began to reach their limits. “We are proud to support our European partners who also treat children whose life-saving care in Ukraine was made impossible by Putin’s war“, she added.
