Founder of donation site Dream or Donate outright: possible scams not investigated further

Now that owner Robert-Jan Mastenbroek has compensated most of the victims, the police are no more.

Chopped

Dream or Donate was taken offline last summer by founder Mastenbroek. At that time, hundreds of donation campaigns were still running for which money still had to be paid out.

According to Mastenbroek, he was hacked and the hackers demanded a ransom. In their own words, a criminal international group would ‘destroy’ him. The police have investigated this scenario, but do not want to say whether Mastenbroek was indeed hacked.

Victims questioned this story and filed a complaint for fraud.

According to the police, most victims have now been paid back by Mastenbroek. Yet there are still victims waiting for their money. “It is expected that all parties, including the last few, will agree,” said a spokesperson for the East Netherlands police.

No criminal investigation

Whether criminal offenses were committed by Mastenbroek has not been investigated by the police. He has never been identified as a suspect. “In this case, the police and the Public Prosecution Service decided to first look at what was possible outside of criminal law in the hope that the victims would be quickly compensated,” said a spokesman.

This is striking, because the police previously reported that this compensation is separate from any criminal prosecution. “These are two separate routes”, police said last year opposite RTL News.

Victims who have reported that they have not been informed by the police and the judiciary about the decision not to prosecute. They can still enforce prosecution through the courts.
