Found seals miles from the sea

– Around 6.30 pm yesterday, I was called after a hiker had the fire brigade and said that there was a seal lying by the Moon, says fire chief Ken Espen Drager in the Tinn fire brigade to Dagbladet.

The moon is the river that flows through Rjukan. As the crow flies, it is about ten miles from the place where the dead seal was found, to the nearest area with salt water.

– I thought we had to run away and check, then there was actually a seal there, says Drager.

The case was first mentioned by Rjukan Arbeiderblad.

Nice in the coat

Drager says that it is not common to find seals in inner Telemark. If it were to swim to where it was found, it would have had to cross several other rivers and water, as well as a number of dams and power plants.

– This is not an animal that belongs nearby here, says Drager, who does not want to speculate on how it ended up on the riverbank in the center of Rjukan.

The harness was fine in the fur, but had clear marks after birds had chopped it.

– We contacted the search teams in Viltnemda, who were to contact the nature inspectorate again, says Drager.

– Dumped

Senior adviser Espen Marker in the Norwegian Environmental Protection Agency tells Dagbladet that there is no way the harness has reached Rjukan on its own.

He says that there are, among other things, several dams and power plants in Måna.

– It has probably been dumped there, Marker says.

He says that they have now contacted the Institute of Marine Research, which will assess what to do with the harness next. Currently, it is still at the fire station in Tinn.
