Scientists have developed a way to evaluate the process by which antigen-recognizing receptors are formed.
British researchers from University College London and the Francis Crick Institute have developed a method to quickly measure the number of T cells in a cancerous tumor. It shows a successful patient response to immunotherapy. The corresponding article was published in the journal Nature.
“Sequencing of the complete exome – all genes encoding proteins – DNA of cancer tumors allows us to understand how they developed in a patient. However, it has not yet been possible to estimate the number of immune cells in a patient’s body using it,” the article says.
Scientists have developed a method for evaluating the V (D) J recombination of T cells. This is the process by which antigen-recognizing receptors are formed.
It is by the number of these antigen receptors that it is possible to predict the effectiveness of the evasion of cancer cells from recognition by the immune system and the response to cancer immunotherapy. In particular, the study was conducted for adenocarcinoma of the lungs.
