Found a protein that prevents the spread of cancer cells

Scientists have discovered a mechanism that is effective in combating metastases

TRPM7 responds to the pressure of fluid in the bloodstream and stops the migration of cancer cells in the vessels, thereby preventing metastases from occurring.

An international team of scientists has identified a special protein that helps prevent tumor cells from spreading to other parts of the body. The results of the study were published in the journal Science Advances. MedicalXpress.-

It is noted that experts from Johns Hopkins University, the University of Alberta and the University of Pompeu Fabra have discovered the TRPM7 protein, which reacts to the pressure of fluid in the bloodstream and stops the spread of cancer cells in the vessels.

TRPM7 was previously known as a calcium regulator in cells, but the new understanding of its role in cancer cell migration has sparked admiration among researchers.

The findings from the study help shed light on a poorly understood process in metastasis – intravasation, when cancer cells separated from the primary tumor enter the bloodstream to travel to other parts of the body and create colonies.

The scientists found that artificially increasing TRPM7 expression in tumor cells could help stop intravasation and ultimately metastasis.

A separate analysis showed that patients with osteosarcoma, breast, stomach and liver cancers expressing high levels of TRPM7 were more likely to survive longer than those with lower protein levels.
