Merdeka.com – Turnersuchus hinleyae is an ancient crocodile fossil recently discovered on the Jurassic Coast, Dorset, England. The Thalattosuchians, colloquially referred to as ‘sea crocodiles’, were prominent members of marine ecosystems from the early Jurassic to the early Cretaceous.

The findings were later reported in the Journal of Vertebrate Paleontology. In the report, the experts stated that the findings were a breath of fresh air to differentiate between thalattosuchia (ancient sea crocodile) and crocodyliform (ancient reptile). Check out the reviews:

Launching from the page sci.newsit is stated that the newly discovered species of Turnersuchus hinleyae is thought to have lived in what is now Great Britain around 185 million years ago.

They appear abruptly in the fossil record with high species richness. The discovery of Turnersuchus hingleyae proves that the kinship between ancient sea crocodiles and ancient reptiles is indeed different.

The earlier Turnersuchus hingleyae, 185 million years ago, had an appearance identical to that of the thalattosuchia.

As mentioned above, if Turnersuchus hingleyae has an identical shape with thalattosuchia. Thalattosuchia itself is a sea crocodile that has become extinct. It is characterized by its features of having short limbs modified into flippers and having a shark-like caudal fin.

Turnersuchus hingleyae also has the potential to have the ability to give birth to life, aka not lay eggs. Due to its relatively long and slender snout, it is similar in appearance to the gharial crocodiles living today in many of the major rivers of the North Indian subcontinent.

Researchers believe that Turnersuchus hingleyae and thalattosuchia lived in the Triassic era. This is a period on the geological time scale that lasted from 252.2 million years ago to 247.2 million years ago.

This period took place after the Permian and was continued by the Jurassic. The beginning and end of the Triassic period were each marked by major extinction events. Scientists hope they can find ancient crocodile species that are even older than this.

“I hope we will continue to find older thalattosuchians and their relatives. Our analysis suggests that thalattosuchians likely first appeared in the Triassic and survived the late Triassic mass extinction,” said Dr Eric Wilberg, Assistant Professor in the Department of Anatomical Sciences, Stony Brook. University as quoted from sci.news, (5/2/2023).
