Epic Games, the publisher of the popular Fortnite video game, said on Thursday it had collected $ 1.78 billion from several investors at a price valuing the company at $ 17.3 billion.
This fundraiser includes the $ 250 million already announced in July by the Japanese giant Sony, as well as funds invested by the companies Baillie Gifford, Fidelity, Lightspeed Venture Partners, the Ontario teachers’ pension fund, the investor David Tepper and funds managed by BlackRock and T. Rowe Price.
Investors already in the capital, KKR and Smash Ventures, have also increased their stake, details a press release.
Epic Games, created in 1991, remains however controlled by its founder and CEO Tim Sweeney.
“The support of leaders in the financial community will allow Epic to accelerate its efforts in creating a new type of digital ecosystem using real-time 3D technology, in services connecting hundreds of millions of people. and in an online store that offers a fair business model, ”Sweeney said in the release.
Epic Games is developing Fortnite, the first version of which was released in 2017 and which claims 350 million accounts. This survival shooter is powered by the Unreal Engine, also used by other titles.
The studio also manages the Epic Games Store, an online content distribution platform.
