Formula 1 has received strong criticism for the controversial list of 10 fastest drivers

Formula 1 last Tuesday published a list of the top ten fastest drivers in the history of the sport in partnership with Amazon Web Services. However, many fans do not understand the origin of this list. For example because a number of great champions are missing.

As part of the 70th anniversary of Formula 1, the royal class has teamed up with data partner Amazon Web Services (AWS). In the past seventy years, no fewer than 775 drivers have appeared at the start, 33 of which have subsequently won a world championship. However, many fans have been asking for years who would have been the fastest Formula 1 driver of all time. Due to the difference in cars, material, circuits and regulations, this does not seem to be possible to calculate one on one, but AWS says it has managed to do it anyway.

The study compared the qualification results of all Formula 1 drivers since 1983, straightening out the differences in the top speeds of the cars using a variety of data. The investigation has shown that Ayrton Senna is the fastest Formula 1 driver since ’83. Seven-time world champion Michael Schumacher is in second place, on average +0.114 seconds behind the Brazilian. Lewis Hamilton completes the top three, followed by none other than Max Verstappen.

Furthermore, Fernando Alonso, Nico Rosberg, Charles Leclerc, Heikki Kovalainen, Jarno Trulli en Sebastian Vettel can be found on the list. However, Formula 1 has received fierce criticism of this list from many fans. For example, because Kovalainen and Trulli are above Vettel, who has four world titles to his name. In addition, relatively new drivers such as Verstappen and Leclerc are in the top ten, while four-time world champion Alain Prost has not made it to the list. This while the Frenchman was able to beat Senna in the world championship at the time.
