Former Youngest Minister Now Threatened to Be Imprisoned

Former Malaysian Minister of Youth and Sports Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman was caught in a corruption case. Malaysia’s youngest former minister faces a maximum sentence of 15 years in prison.

Reported by local media Malaysiakini and The Star, Thursday (5/8/2021), Syed Saddiq was charged with conspiracy to commit money laundering amounting to 100 thousand Ringgit, equivalent to Rp. 340 million.

Syed Saddiq is a member of parliament for the Muar region. He denied himself guilty after two money laundering charges were read out. The indictment was read out in court at the Johor Bahru Court on Thursday (5/8) morning local time.

In the indictment document, Syed Saddiq is accused of transferring funds totaling 100 thousand Ringgit, which was allegedly obtained through money laundering activities. The transfers made occurred on two occasions on 16 and 19 June 2018, with 50 thousand Ringgit each for each transfer.

Syed Saddiq was indicted under section 4(1) of the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act 2001.

When proven guilty in the two charges. Syed Saddiq carries a maximum penalty of 15 years in prison, or a fine of not less than five times the amount earned from illegal activities, or a maximum of 5 million Ringgit, whichever is higher.

Malaysia’s Youngest Minister

Syed Saddiq is 29 years old this year. He served as the Minister of Youth and Athletics of Malaysia from July 2018 to February 2020 under the rule of Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad.

He is also Malaysia’s youngest minister. After completing his post, Seyd Saddiq is still active as a politician in Malaysia.

Syed Saddiq has previously been charged with misappropriation of 1.12 million ringgit in funds from his former party, Bersatu. He also pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Syed Saddiq, the former United Party Youth Chief, is known to have sided with former Prime Minister (PM) Mahathir Mohamad when the split occurred in the United Party body last year. Good Syed Saddiq nor Mahathir was later removed from the United Party, which is now led by Muhyiddin Yassin who serves as Malaysia’s PM.
