Former VRT reporter Fred Janssen passed away

Fred Janssen, former program maker and reporter for the public broadcaster, has passed away. During his career at BRT and VRT he made programs such as’ Echo ‘,’ Terloops’, Afrit 9 ‘and’ NV De Wereld ‘. Janssen has died from the effects of cancer, VRT Nieuws reports on its website.

Fred Janssen (° 1947 in Neerpelt) already made radio during his student days in 1967 with the then Omroep Limburg. In the early 1970s he switched to television and became a reporter for the iconic TV program “Echo”, a weekly program with human interest news that did not make it to “Het Journaal”. Afterwards, together with colleague Jan Van Rompaey, he presented “Magesien”, the first satirical program of the public broadcaster. From 1974 to 1989 he was one of the permanent employees of “Terloops”, another human interest program.

Janssen ended his career as producer-editor of a series of programs on “The Zoo” in the context of “Life as it is”. He retired in 2008. Jan Van Rompaey calls him an “erudite man who has had a great career”. “He was very good with people which made him perfect for programs like Echo and Cascade”.
