Caruana Galizia was killed by a car bomb on October 16, 2017. The murder has turned the spotlight on Malta and the stories of corruption by top politicians and businessmen on the island.
The journalist investigated Keith Schembri, the private secretary of then Prime Minister Joseph Muscat, and former Tourism Minister Konrad Mizzi. The two are said to have accepted bribes from Yorgen Fenech, one of Malta’s most distinguished businessmen. Fenech was arrested at the end of November on suspicion of complicity in the murder.
Cabinet chief Schembri, who according to Fenech would have ordered the murder, has been arrested and released. Caruana Galizia’s family has accused former Prime Minister Joseph Muscat of intervening in the investigation into her death in order to protect his former private secretary. An investigation is still ongoing against Schembri.
