TEL AVIV – Former head Mossad Yossi Cohen, who served five years under Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, admits he is confused as to why United States of America (USA) takes an antagonistic position against China .

He also said he did not understand what Washington was trying to achieve with its hostile policy towards Beijing.

Cohen conveyed this while giving a lecture at Bar-Ilan University. “I don’t understand what America wants from China,” he said.

“If anyone understands, they should explain it to me. China is not against us and is not our enemy,” continued the former Israeli spy boss, as quoted from Sputniknews, Saturday (12/6/2021).

Cohen, who is actively communicating not only with students but also with the press despite recently retiring from Mossad, specifically questioned the usefulness of US efforts to determine whether the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus that causes COVID-19 was man-made in China.

US President Joe Biden said last month that American spy agencies were unable to come to a unified conclusion on the theory that the virus that causes COVID-19 was produced in a Chinese laboratory and released by accident.

Biden ordered intelligence services to conduct an extensive investigation into the matter and make a final decision on the matter.

Biden’s idea sparked strong criticism in China, which vehemently denies allegations the virus originated in one of its laboratories.

Israel had previously had disagreements with the US regarding China even before Cohen’s lecture was delivered. China and Israel have extensive trade relations and Tel Aviv has even expressed interest in taking part in Beijing’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) under which China will invest in Israel’s Haifa Port.

Washington has expressed concern that China’s presence at the port could jeopardize joint US-Israeli operations. However, Tel Aviv has dismissed such concerns as unfounded.
