Former international Verhaegh will definitely stop ’99 percent ‘ NOW

Paul Verhaegh assumes that he played his last game as a pro. The three-time Orange international, whose contract with FC Twente expires next summer, is not looking for a new club.

“It is 99 percent sure that I will stop. I think I can look back on a wonderful career”, Verhaegh told Friday Tubantia.

The 36-year-old defender played for AGOVV Apeldoorn, FC Den Bosch and Vitesse and then had his best years in Germany with FC Augsburg and VfL Wolfsburg.

In his time at Augsburg, he was then joined by the national coach Louis van Gaal in the Orange selection and played in the eighth finals of the 2014 World Cup against Mexico.

His return to the Netherlands did not become what he hoped for Verhaegh. In the past season, the routine played only seven Eredivisie matches for FC Twente. “It is a pity that I was injured so often at Twente, while in the years before I have almost always been fit.”

‘As if the selection dissolved into nothing’

Due to the global outbreak of the coronavirus, Verhaegh had a strange end at the Enschede club, where he had only trained in recent weeks.

“It was as if the selection dissolved into nothing,” he says. “You talk to each other for a while, you wish each other success and that was it. That felt quite strange, because so many people leave at the same time.”

Among the departing people are also trainer Gonzalo García and technical director Ted van Leeuwen. It is not yet known who will be the trainer of Twente next season.
