Former hotel in Albergen delayed in becoming home for asylum seekers due to pending environmental permit

It will take until at least after the summer holidays before asylum seekers can live in the former hotel in Albergen, Twente. This is because the environmental permit is still pending.

The Central Agency for the Reception of Asylum Seekers (COA) had already applied for the environmental permit in February. But it now appears that the municipality of Tubbergen, which includes Albergen, needs even more information. This is confirmed by the COA after reporting by RTV East.

The COA bought hotel ‘t Elshuys in August last year. The purchase sparked outrage because the municipality was passed over in the decision. According to State Secretary Eric van der Burg (Asylum), the coercive measure was necessary because the municipality always refused to cooperate.

A COA spokesperson does not want to speak of a delay, now that the municipality has requested additional information. According to him, this is part of the process of obtaining an environmental permit. According to him, it was also never communicated when the asylum seekers would arrive in the former hotel. “And we’re not going to do that now.”

But the municipality reported last year that the first asylum seekers were expected to arrive in October. That is now almost a year later. A maximum of 150 asylum seekers can be accommodated in the hotel.
