Former F1 driver Palmer: “Verstappen is a worthy champion”

The results of the all-deciding Abu Dhabi Grand Prix have caused quite a stir. Mercedes filed multiple protests which were subsequently rejected by the stewards. The German racing stable announced that it wanted to challenge the decision, but later withdrew it.

Jolyon Palmer thinks it is a shame, but also typical that the season should end like this. “We wanted this championship to be decided by a fantastic wheel-to-wheel fight and not in the stewards’ room.”

“The incident with the safety car is debatable, but whatever you think about it. Max Verstappen deserves the championship,” concludes Palmer in his column for Formula1.com.

Two deserved winners

The former F1 driver has enjoyed the battle between Verstappen and Hamilton. The Briton therefore believes that both drivers would have deserved the championship.

“Verstappen and Hamilton were spurred on and both have had a fantastic season this year. Each on their way to perfection in one of the most intense battles for the title ever. They would both have been deserved winners in Abu Dhabi.”

Hamilton isn’t done yet

Palmer is also full of praise for Hamilton. “Lewis suffered a heavy defeat but was very magnanimous. He showed the elegance and sportsmanship of a champion, just like Felipe Massa in 2008,” Palmer recalled. Hamilton won his first title that year at the expense of the Brazilian.

The former Renault driver also has a warning for Verstappen, he thinks Hamilton will fight for the title again next year. “He’s been brilliant all year and there’s no sign that he’s going to get any better. I’m sure he’ll push just as hard for number eight next season.”
