Former Chinese Deputy Security Minister jailed for life for corruption

BEIJING, KOMPAS.com – Former senior Chinese security official faces life in prison for corruption and other crimes.

According to a statement from the Intermediate People’s Court in Changchun City, the court sentenced Sun Lijun to a suspended death sentence.

Reported by Reuters, The Chinese state news agency Xinhua reported that the death sentence would be commuted to life imprisonment after two years, with no possibility of parole.

Chinese authorities announced a series of convictions against high-ranking figures this week as the anti-corruption campaign expands ahead of a key political meeting next month.

During the meeting, President Xi Jinping is expected to secure an unprecedented third term.

The court said Sun, who previously served as Former Chinese Deputy Minister of Public Securityhe had abused his power in several influential positions between 2001 and 2020.

The 53-year-old pleaded guilty in July to accepting bribes of more than 646 million yuan (91 million US dollars).

“(Sun) is deprived of his political rights for life and all personal property must be confiscated,” the court said in its ruling on Friday (9/23/2022).

In its statement, the Chinese court said Sun’s other crimes included manipulation of the stock market and illegal possession of firearms.

It is known that in the decade following President Xi Jinping’s rise to power, he campaigned against corruption in the ruling Communist Party.

On Thursday 22 September, the former Chinese justice minister was also sentenced to life in prison for accepting bribes worth more than 117 million yuan.

Other high-ranking officials who have recently received prison sentences include police chiefs of the provinces of Shanghai, Chongqing and Shanxi.

At the last Party Congress in 2017, Xi vowed to continue targeting “tigers” and “flies”, which refer to elite officials and low-level bureaucrats, in his fight against corruption.
