One of the best things I know about Moscow is the metro. Now it is creating debate.

The Kievskaya station opened in 1954. It is executed in a kind of Soviet Baroque style, which was common after the war.

KORRESPONDENTBREV: The first time I traveled by subway in Moscow, I was speechless by the beauty. It’s like walking through ballrooms with crystal chandeliers, marble columns, large bronze sculptures and glittering mosaic paintings.

When you take the escalator down into one of these deep chambers, you have the feeling of entering a hectic and noisy art museum.

9 million people are transported by rail every day. That should make it the busiest in the world. During rush hour, it can be 1 million people underground at the same time. Then there will be a queue. Long queues. Moscow is now introducing a new system to help with the situation. Not everyone is happy with that.
