Unsuspecting Marie-José van den Berg took a walk with her friend and dog through the woods of Middelbeers in the Netherlands. Until the lady discovered something along the forest path that frightened her: a coffin with a toppled tombstone next to it.
At first Marie-José thought that a funeral ceremony had taken place in the woods and that the coffin had been left behind and might be buried in the woods after all. “There was a lid on it, but slanted, so not at the foot end,” Marie-José tells Omroep Brabant. “My girlfriend Gerda happens to be in the funeral industry, so she reacted a bit more down-to-earth than I did. She immediately saw that it was a real coffin that is used for funerals and decided to see if anyone was in it. ”
They did not find a body, but clothing. “Okay, we thought, someone has crawled out of there and is walking through the woods in his Adam’s costume. I didn’t like it and saw danger behind every tree ”, says Marie-José.
Ghost tour
In the end, the situation turned out to be a bit less sinister than they initially thought. “We found out by asking around that a scout group had been on a ghost tour. That coffin was also part of it. Not so smart, of course, to leave such a thing unattended there. ”
Despite the fact that the shock was good, Marie-José has not stopped walking. “No, it didn’t leave me any trauma for life, thankfully.”
