The students fled from their student housing on foot along the main road while their library burned down, AFP journalists from the place report.
The fire has destroyed a restaurant next to the statue of British colonial master Cecil Rhodes.
The slopes above the Newlands neighborhood were on fire on Sunday after the fire broke out the same morning.

Helicopters
The wind scattered the flames over the dry terrain of the mountain slope near the University of Cape Town (UCT). Several buildings on the university’s campus have caught fire, and a historic windmill has been taken by the flames, photos from the site show.
Authorities are asking other residents and visitors to leave the area immediately, reports BBC.
Over a hundred firefighters and other emergency personnel have been dispatched to the campus and to Table Mountain National Park. Four helicopters are participating in the extinguishing work.

Drought
One firefighter is being treated in hospital, the fire service informs.
Authorities say literary treasures have been lost at the UCT library, but some of the most valuable works have been salvaged.
South Africa is hit by drought which increases the risk of fire. Cape Town authorities are urging residents to be vigilant.
– At this time, there is no reason to evacuate, but we ask residents to do the following: close all windows to prevent drafts and turn down the heat, water the garden, says Charlotte Powell in the city’s emergency services.
The Landmark Table Mountain is a mountain plateau south of Cape Town. On Sunday, hikers were asked to leave the national park, which stretches over large parts of Cape Town’s undeveloped areas.

Southern Norway affected
In this country, the drought has led to a number of grass fires on Sunday.
Among other things, the fire service has responded to grass fires in Fredrikstad, Sarpsborg, Agder and Kongsberg.
