The decision was made after considering the collective application “On the Preservation of Latvian Forests”.

The government is also tasked with assessing the possibility of reviewing forest ecosystem protection and management policies, taking into account the need to ensure biodiversity, climate-neutral management in agriculture and forestry, and the recreational and other needs of society.

The government must submit a report to the Saeima by 30 December.

The draft decision also instructs the government to establish an inter-ministerial working group, which is required to develop a forest management policy planning document for the period until 2030 by 1 July 2023.

It should be reminded that the initiative “On Preservation of Latvian Forests” was submitted to the Saeima at the end of April and was signed by 10,075 citizens. The collection of the lists started already in 2011, according to the publicly available information on the portal “Manabalss.lv”.

The authors of the initiative call: “Stop mass deforestation, prevent the plunder of our natural resources now and in the future.”

“Nature is our treasure, which is easy to lose but impossible to recover. The crisis will end, but the scars will remain in our forests for decades, even centuries. The forest is not a nursery.
