Work under supervision
Doctors’ organization KNMG is positive about the use of foreign qualified doctors if they are competent. But that competence must first be established, says spokesman Danielle Dil of the KNMG.
Should there really be an emergency, a hospital board should assess that ability. And then a BIG registration is not necessarily necessary for the doctors’ organization. Foreign doctors will then have to work under supervision, as will Dutch doctors who are no longer in the BIG register.
In an emergency, a driver must therefore be able to determine within a short time whether someone is competent enough. That is precisely why the VBGA is now making an inventory of which foreign doctors are available and how far they are with their competence tests.
Extended arm construction
The Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport calls it “very heartwarming” that so many people want to help. Foreign doctors who do not yet meet the BIG guidelines can work according to the “extended arm construction”, says VWS. This means that they work under the responsibility of someone who is competent. For notifications, the ministry refers to a regional contact point for employers.
170 refugee doctors
The Dutch organization UAF supports refugees in the Netherlands. “I know that there are more doctors and nurses who want to get involved, but are unable to do so now,” said director Mardjan Seighali. “They are eager to roll up their sleeves.”
In total, her organization helps 170 refugee doctors, nurses and other care providers. It is not known how many foreign doctors reside in the Netherlands in total.
