BILTHOVEN Last week, the number of new reports of COVID-19 in the Netherlands fell slightly compared to the week before. That’s the first time since the week of August 25. However, the reproduction number R is still completely above 1. The number of new hospital admissions has increased slightly.
In the past week, RIVM received 64,087 new reports of COVID-19. These are 3,455 (-5%) reports less than the week before. Especially in the last days we saw a lower number of reports. That seems to be an effect of the measures that came into effect at the end of September and mid-October. The reproduction number is slowly falling, but just after the measures taken in mid-October, it is still not below 1. The number of infectious persons remains high, with 166,000 persons this week.
In the age groups over 60 years, a decrease in the number of positive people tested is not yet visible. The difference between the number of reports in younger and older age groups has narrowed again this week.
In 16 of the 25 GGD Municipal Health Service regions, the number of reports of positive COVID-19 tests has decreased. The largest decrease in the number of new reports is visible in the regions of Amsterdam-Amstelland and Hollands-Midden; Compared to the week before, the number of reports has fallen by at least 20%. The regions with the highest number of reports per 100,000 inhabitants are Rotterdam-Rijnmond, South Holland-South and Central and West-Brabant, these regions had more than 500 reports per 100,000 inhabitants.
FIRST DROP SINCE JULY From October 26 to November 1, 295,147 people were tested in the GGD test lanes, which is more than 26,500 people less than in the previous week. The results are known for 292,613 people. Of this group, 48,495 people tested positive. The percentage of positive tests is still high (16.6%), but has decreased for the first time since July 2020 compared to the previous week.
The percentage of positive tests decreased in almost all regions. However, there are major differences between the regions. The regions with the lowest percentage of positive tests were Groningen, Fryslân and Drenthe (20%).
MORE HOSPITAL ADMISSIONS AND DEATHS, LESS ICU RECORDINGS Last week, the NICE foundation registered 1,966 people admitted to the nursing wards because of COVID-19, which is 227 new admissions more than the week before (+ 13%). The number of admissions to the ICU was 312 this week, slightly less than the week before, when 333 new admissions were registered to the ICU (-3.5%).
DEATH INCREASES FURTHER Statistics Netherlands reported higher than expected mortality in the week of 19 to 25 October, as in the previous weeks. The mortality rate in this week was nearly 600 higher than expected. The RIVM also updates mortality figures on a weekly basis. In the most recent data from the RIVM National Institute for Public Health and the Environment from 15 to 21 October, the mortality has increased slightly in the age group 55-64 years, increased in the age group 65-74 years and strongly increased in the age group 75 years. and older.
REPRODUCTIEGETAL R The reproduction number of October 16 is 1.11 (lower limit: 1.09 and upper limit: 1.13). This is slightly lower than a few weeks ago, but the confidence interval is still completely above 1. The reproduction number of 1.11 means that 100 people with COVID-19 together infect 111 other people with the virus.
The number of infectious persons is more than 166,000 (with a lower limit of 120,000 and an upper limit of more than 210,000).
