The city of New YorkOnce the epicenter of the United States coronavirus outbreak, it just reported its first day with zero confirmed or probable deaths from the virus since the pandemic hit New York State.
The milestone came Sunday in initial data from the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene.
It marked the end of a four-month period since the city reported its first death from COVID-19 on March 11. The confirmed daily death count peaked on April 7 at 597. It was reported that another 216 people likely died from the virus even though there were no positive lab tests that day.
“New Yorkers have been the heroes of this story, going above and beyond to stay safe,” City Council spokeswoman Avery Cohen said in an emailed statement.
New York state reported five deaths statewide on Sunday, but did not specify where they occurred. The highest number of deaths in the entire state was reported on April 9, with 799.
New York City has reported a total of 18,670 confirmed deaths from COVID-19 and 4,613 probable deaths.
State and local data often conflict, and the numbers may change due to delays in laboratory results, as some deaths initially reported as probable may later change for confirmation.
On Saturday, an additional 341 people tested positive for COVID-19 in New York City, a rate of 1.3 percent, according to state data. The city kicked off its reopening Phase Three on Monday, allowing beauty salons, tanning studios and dog races to open.
Eating in establishments in the city has been postponed indefinitely as other states, including Texas Y Florida, have seen spikes in new cases after the reopening of bars and restaurants.
“In the absence of national leadership, our city has stepped forward to show what it means to reopen safely,” Cohen said. “With cases on the rise across the country, we know that we still cannot lower our guard and we will continue to do everything we can to fight the virus together.”
Washington D. C. It has also seen coronavirus deaths decline this month. Figures released by the mayor’s office on Sunday showed no new deaths in the past three days.
In the United States in general, the deaths reported by COVID-19 were 134,904 as of Sunday, 0.4 percent more per day.
