For the first time since 1993: New York City experienced a “shot-free” weekend.
——
New York is the city that never sleeps. Last weekend, for once, it was not the sounds of gunfire that kept the residents awake. There was no shooting on Friday, Saturday or Sunday in all of New York City. It is the first “shot-free” weekend since 1993, reports the “New York Post”.

The last shooting of the week took place in Brooklyn on Thursday morning. A 25-year-old man was shot in the stomach around noon. Then the guns rested at the Big Apple. “I really don’t remember a weekend when nobody in town fired a shot,” said City Police Department chief Terence Monahan. It has been in use since 1982. “It’s a different city.”

Gun violence in New York City is on the decline
New York Mayor Bill de Blasio was also delighted on Monday when he gave a speech to a graduate class of young police officers. «I have to tell them they are a winning team. Not a single shot in a weekend – isn’t that unbelievable, ”he asked the group.
–
The joy was short-lived, however. A few moments after the mayor’s speech, there was a shooting in the New York suburb of the Bronx. A man was hit by a bullet, but according to the authorities, his life is not in danger

The historic weekend is not just a coincidence: Gun violence has declined in New York City in recent years. According to the latest crime statistics published on October 7th, there have been 600 shots so far in 2018. This corresponds to a decrease of 1.1 percent compared to the previous year. (nim)
