for future AirTags?

The Find My app helps you find your Apple devices. This works for an iPhone, an iPad, but also a Mac or even accessories marked with the apple, Apple Watch and AirPods in particular. On the other hand, it does not work for third party accessories… For now!

Indeed, as part of CES 2021, Belkin has announced to prepare headphones compatible with the Find Apple service. These are the SoundForm Freedom, scheduled for release next spring.

Other third-party objects could be seen in Locate in the future, for example with the help of the object tracker that the Californian firm would prepare, called for now “AirTag”. Rumors about this project have been rife in recent months and persistent. In addition, a new clue was revealed by our fellow MacRumors recently, with the help of one of their readers.

The latter discovered that by returning a certain address in Safari, the Find My app was launched with a special tab not normally accessible by opening the same app in the classic way. The tab is called “Objects” and displays an illustration already seen in the past, containing 3 items, a bike, a backpack and keys. To get there and test for yourself, follow these steps:

  • In the Safari app, in the address bar type “findmy: // items”
  • Do “Access”
  • The Locate app opens on the “Objects” tab
  • You can try to add an object to see what the start of the pairing procedure for a Find compatible accessory looks like.

It works on iPhone and iPad running iOS 14.3 or iPadOS 14.3 or later.

This is certainly where Belkin headphones will be able to be registered and take advantage of the Locate service. This may also be where AirTags object sensors can be tracked.

We are in any case anxious to know what will be the next third-party products or Apple products to be able to take advantage of this handy Locate feature. AirTags, which some analysts were already predicting for 2020, still haven’t shown up, while Samsung yesterday showed off its in-house object sensors, the SmartTag, during his Unpacked event, having also revealed a new galaxy s21.
