“For a moment it seemed as if we were at Graspop”: this was Metallica on Rock Werchter | THE FESTIVAL SUMMER

MusicThe anxious hours earlier this week – when Metallica’s concert at Rock Werchter threatened to be canceled for a while after a corona infection – seemed completely forgotten and forgiven on Friday evening. The American band gave it a solid lap, much to the joy of the massively present fans.

The Werchter meadow was given a Graspop look on Friday. The fiery countdown to the Metallica concert – the closing of the day – was also visible in the sea of people. Completely black outfits – despite the sun – and band shirts: the fans lined up early on the main stage so as not to miss a second of their favorite band. That meant that they also had to defy acts like Lewis Capaldi – not exactly a genre colleague of Metallica. “I’ve never sung for metalheads,” the musician joked anyway. “I know you’re not here for me, but I hope I can entertain you while waiting for Metallica.”

For a moment, the wait seemed to be rewarded sooner than expected, because the organization announced that the band would start twenty minutes earlier than expected. Only Metallica itself seemed not to have received that memo, because the gentlemen were only on stage at eleven o’clock. Although the wait was more than rewarded: the show was everything you could expect from Metallica. Tight guitar work, a series of hits – from ‘Nothing Else Matters’, to ‘One’, ‘Master of Puppets’ and ‘Enter Sandman’ – and little nonsense between the songs. Although frontman James Hetfield had to say something: “I live my childhood dream on stage every night.” As usual, they concluded with a boatload of fireworks. Metallica literally and figuratively closed the second day of the festival with a bang.
