The professional players’ union SAFP (Swiss Association of Football Players) used the past weekend to make a lot of calls. Their employees conducted a survey of 140 players in the Super and Challenge League on current topics, of course primarily in connection with the problems caused by the pandemic.
–
Because the players surveyed are all union members, the result of the survey is the official position of the SAFP. Some results are somewhat surprising. Here are the most important:
–
(Important: These two questions could be answered independently of one another!)
–
64% of players are currently opting to cancel the season.
–
A one or two month quarantine of the entire team at a certain location, separated from the family, is massively rejected.
–
The players also reveal that the club has insufficient transparency in this crisis, as the following examples show.
–
78% stated that they were not transparently informed about the club’s financial situation when the balance sheet was presented.
–
Of course, there is also talk of the contract extension beyond June 30, which would be necessary if a ghost game season was approved that would last until the beginning of August:
–
80% of players want the SAFP to require club extensions for the same financial terms.
88% of clubs have not yet had any discussions with the players about these extensions.
–
And then there’s the mode. It is clear to the players: an increase in the Super League should come back on the wallpaper:
–
93% support an increase in the Super League. 57% on 12 teams, only 26% on 14 teams. 86% say the increase should take place immediately, i.e. for the 2020/21 season.
–
Are the players heard?
Let’s see if the players’ opinions influence those of their bosses. They will meet virtually on Friday for a conference call. Next week there will be an extraordinary general assembly with a physical presence. Then it is decided how to proceed. Whether canceled or whether there will be ghost games.
