Football matches in Belarus now also canceled due to corona crisis NOW

In Belarus, the only European country where the football competition has continued in recent months, two games were canceled on Monday due to the corona crisis.

It concerns the duels FC Minsk-Neman Grodno and Arsenal Dzersjinsk-Lokomotiv Gomel. Minsk and Lokomotiv Gomel players had symptoms of COVID-19, after which the Belarusian Football Association decided to postpone both confrontations.

The other duels at the highest level in Belarus will continue. Additional precautions are taken. For example, the supporters must have their temperature measured at the entrance of the stadium and they must distance themselves from each other in the stands.

Unlike in all other European countries, the Belarusian Football Association refused to temporarily stop playing football in March due to the outbreak of the corona virus. All that time there was also a general public welcome, but that was increasingly the case at home.

Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko, who has been the country’s top boss since 1994, denied the existence of the corona crisis in March. Remarkably, he instructed his countrymen as follows: “Drink a lot of vodka, go to the sauna and work hard.”

As far as we know, the coronavirus figures in Belarus are less severe than in almost all other European countries. In that country, ‘only’ 23,906 people have now become infected with COVID-19 and 135 people have died from the disease.
