Football – Freiburg im Breisgau – “Not just a job”: Streich’s commitment to Freiburg – Sport

Freiburg (dpa / lsw) – Sometimes even the otherwise so opinionated Christian Streich lacks the right words. At least that’s how it worked when on Friday afternoon he commented on his contract extension as head coach at SC Freiburg in a somewhat hesitant voice. Although it was “a matter of course” for him, no negotiations were even necessary.

“We have an agreement that we will continue together until someone says I don’t want it anymore – either the club or me,” said Streich, who had turned 55 the day before: “I like being a coach here, and I hope to be a coach for a few more years. ” The continuity on the coaching post of the Baden first division club, which is exceptional for the fast-paced football business, therefore continues for the time being.

In the past few years, Streich had repeatedly indicated that he did not know how long he would still have enough strength for the demanding and demanding job. He still seems to feel this, even if the club did not announce, as usual, for how long the longest-serving coach in the Bundesliga had signed. “If we continue to get along so well and don’t lose so often, I hope it will go on for a long time,” said Streich, who will also retain the entire team of coaches.

“It is important that we have a high level of continuity. From the personalities, these are all great boys and from the age structure, it is also a good mix,” said the 55-year-old about the colleagues with whom he is already in part Has worked together. After his career as a player, he started as a youth coach at the sports club in 1995, won three DFB junior cup winners and one German champions with the U19. He took over as head coach at the professionals at the end of December 2011.

“Christian lives this club and carries the SC philosophy in his heart,” said SC sports director Jochen Saier about the contract extension. The longstanding cooperation has meant that for Streich it is “not just a job”. Compared to coaches from other clubs, who have been fired several times, he “was unable and unwilling to build up a distance,” he said. But he also enjoys the “exceptional situation” that he has been able to live in his home region for many years, has his family and friends around him, and can come to work by bike.

Another factor that contributed to his well-being was the fact that he and the team secured early relegation to the class and that Freiburg now went “with ease and joy to Wolfsburg” (prank). Perhaps his team is giving him important points for qualifying for the Europa League. The away game at VfL on Saturday (3:30 p.m. / Sky) will be Streichs 250th as Bundesliga coach. He had missed two games at the beginning of the 2018/19 season due to a herniated disc.
