It is October 1st, 2016: Fredy Bickel shows the shell in Mettmenstetten ZH on Sunday. His retirement home will be built here. A family project. Two apartments are being built on the ground floor – one for him, the other for his older daughter Lara. Bickel’s sister will move in with her husband and children on the first floor. At the top a social room.
–
Suddenly Bickel involuntarily has a lot of time to monitor the construction. He has just been released as a YB sports director, Bang on a Case. Bickel is disappointed, needs distance and wants to avoid the stadiums. Nevertheless, he says: «The last few months have been consuming me, I need a break. I think at some point my batteries will be recharged and I want to make a difference in football again. I am 51 now and still too young to stop working. And too old to start something completely new. » Maybe now he has time to make his dreams come true. Write a book. Sing a song. Moving into the house, says the single.
–
It is April 17th, 2020: Bickel, now 54, is sitting in his garden seat in Mettmenstetten. Next to him is his life partner, the comedian Regula Esposito (54). When they recorded a song with Beat Schlatter in December 2016, they came closer. He moved into the house and sang the song. He still owes the book. And yet Bickel is almost in the same place as it was almost four years ago. After his time at YB, he was Head of Sports at Rapid Vienna for over two years until April 2019. A week ago he was released by the new GC owners after just half a year in office bang on a case.
–
Fredy Bickel, like four years ago you were just fired as head of sports. Did you see your end coming to GC? Fredy Bickel: No. I was totally surprised. A week earlier, Andras Gurovits’ board of directors assured me that the Chinese investors would continue to plan with me.
–
How did you find out about your exemption? It was Erich Vogel who first made it clear to me that he does not believe that I will have a future at GC beyond the season.
–
Why bird? What did he have to do with the Chinese deal? Erich is GC through and through. And worries about the club every day.
–
Did he thread the deal? I was not there.
–
What do you think of GC being Chinese now? I’m torn. It is certainly positive that GC has now been secured for years. Especially in this difficult time. On the other hand, it also hurts that GC was sold abroad.
–
Wouldn’t there have been interested Swiss investors? I can not answer that. I took care of the day-to-day business and Andras the future. I have only put together the documents. For the Chinese too …
–
Sounds like you’re mad. Don’t be mad. Rather disappointed and irritated. I have put my heart and soul into GC for hours. If you had been honest with each other and had acted professionally, a wonderful transition for the benefit of all parties would have been possible.
–
Are you worried about GC? No. Now the financial means are there. We have a great coaching crew and the team has also found each other.
–
You brought coach Goran Djuricin to GC, he even lives with you. Do you think if the new GC leadership claims that they will continue to plan with him? I really want it for him and his staff. You deserve it.
–
Can he live with you when he’s back in Switzerland? From me, of course. But he and the new GC leadership have to decide that.
–
Four years ago you thought you were too young to stop working, but too old to do something new. How is it today I’m still too young to stop.
–
After being released from YB, you avoided the stadiums … … This is the case again today. But this time only because no games are taking place.
–
So this discharge is less close to you? But. But in the meantime I’ve gotten a little older again.
–
Would you be ready for a new job? I am not that far yet. But I already have ideas and projects. For example, becoming Regula’s manager (laughs). Or record another song with Schlatter.
–
Maybe it would be time to start with your book. Four years ago you would have the title “Professional Football – Dream or Nightmare?” chosen. What is it called today? I have already been offered a book project. It would be called “the last seven days of GC”.
