Eighteen teams will take part in the upcoming Belgian football league instead of the current sixteen. The management of the competition resorted to a change of format after Waasland-Beveren succeeded in appealing against the relegation last season, prematurely terminated due to a coronavirus pandemic.

The Belgian league was suspended in March and then definitively terminated in May. FC Bruges with the Czech forward Michael Krmenčík were declared champions.
The last team of the Waasland-Beveren table was to descend to the second league, but he appealed and succeeded in court with the defense that if the league was over, he could be saved.

In addition, the court threatened the competition with a fine of 2.5 million euros (about 66 million crowns) for each match played without a club from East Flanders in the league.
In order for the league not to be played in an odd number of 17 teams, it was expanded by both participants in the second-league play-off Leuven and Beerschot, of which only one would normally advance.
The new year of the Belgian league will start on August 8.
