The BBC has stopped production of the popular motoring program “Top Gear”.

The background is an accident with Andrew “Freddie” Flintoff last December.

– We have apologized sincerely to Freddie and will continue to support him in his rehabilitation, stated BBC in a press release on Thursday.

The broadcaster further writes that they “under the circumstances feel it would be inappropriate to resume production of season 34”.

In December, former cricket star and Top Gear presenter Flintoff was injured on a test track in Dunsfold, south of London.

He received medical treatment at the scene and was taken to hospital.

– We understand that this will be disappointing for the fans, but it is the right thing to do, and we will make a decision on how best to proceed later this year, says the BBC about the production stoppage.

An investigation of the health and safety conditions in the production team will now be initiated by an independent third party, according to BBC.

The BBC has also carried out its own investigations into the accident.
