Amid heightened tensions between the US and China following the visit of US House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi to Taiwan, five US House of Representatives and Representatives visited Taiwan again on the 14th.
The American Association of Taiwanese Association (AIT), the American embassy in Taiwan, said in a statement today that five congressional delegations led by Democratic Senator Ed Mackie had visited Taiwan as part of an Indo-Pacific tour.
This visit to Taiwan was accompanied by Democrats John Garamendy, Alan Loensol and Don Bayer, and Republican Representative Aumua Amata Coleman Radewagen.
It is reported that Rep. Macy arrived at Taipei Taoyuan Airport on the afternoon of the 14th, and four other lawmakers arrived at Taipei Songshan Airport on a US C-40C flight around 7 pm.
Congressional delegations will meet with local senior leaders to discuss issues of mutual interest, including US-Taiwan relations, regional security, trade and investment, global supply chains and climate change, AIT said.
The Office of the President of Taiwan said the delegation will meet with President Tsai Ing-wen on the morning of the 15th. It is also known that he will meet with Taiwanese Foreign Minister Joseph Wu and Taiwanese lawmakers.
The legislators’ trip to Taiwan was accomplished 11 days after Chairman Pelosi, who visited Taiwan on the 2nd, left Taiwan after completing a two-day, one-night schedule.
China conducted a large-scale military exercise in protest against Chairman Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan, and even after announcing the end of the exercise on the 10th, a Chinese military plane flew over the middle line of the Taiwan Strait from the 11th to the 14th.
Relations between the United States and China have also been extremely strained, with the United States also declaring a cessation of dialogue and cooperation in eight points.
