New York reports 800 new corona deaths

With 799 new coronavirus fatalities in just one day, New York sets a new, sad record. But despite the rising numbers, the US state seems to be getting the pandemic under control: According to Governor Cuomo, the exit restrictions are “working better than everyone thought”.
In the United States, nearly 2,000 people died of coronavirus infection for the second day in a row. According to the Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, the total number of deaths was just under 15,000. In total, more than 430,000 were infected with the new virus – the country has by far the most infected people worldwide. Spain is in second place with a total of 152,000 proven cases.
The US state of New York recorded the highest number of fatalities, the numbers continue to rise. As Governor Andrew Cuomo said, 799 people died as a result of an infection on Wednesday – the highest number reported to date. There were 731 deaths in the state on Tuesday. In total, New York has so far recorded 7,067 coronavirus deaths.
At the same time, Cuomo emphasized that the number of patient admissions to hospitals is falling. The number of hospital patients increased by 200 net. “That’s the lowest number since this nightmare began.” This is the lowest increase in three weeks, so the numbers developed far better than the forecasts predicted, which Cuomo mainly attributed to the effectiveness of the exit restrictions. “They’re working better than everyone thought,” said the governor.
“We can’t relax”
The infection curve is flattening out, but efforts to contain the virus should not slacken, warned the governor. “We can’t relax.” He appealed to the population to keep leaving the house as little as possible. Cuomo also talked about the reopening of the economy, which must take place very carefully and gradually. There is also the risk of new waves of infection, especially if the virus mutates. The head of the National Institute for Allergies and Infectious Diseases, Anthony Fauci, also warned the US government against hasty relaxation of the measures.
New York is the focus of the pandemic in the United States. In the state with the metropolis of the same name, there are by far the most cases of infection and death. The White House warned last week that despite containment measures, there could be between 100,000 and 240,000 deaths in the US from the coronavirus.
The economic effects are also becoming increasingly dramatic. In the past week, 6.6 million people registered as unemployed, as the US Department of Labor announced on Thursday. This means that almost 17 million people in the USA have lost their jobs within three weeks. The US Federal Reserve issued an emergency program worth $ 2.3 trillion. The pandemic has largely brought economic activity to a standstill in many industries. Numerous companies had to close at least temporarily.
