FMD-affected meat can be consumed at a temperature of 95 degrees

Jakarta, CNN Indonesia

Chairman of the Cutting Network and Trader Indonesian Meat (Jappdi) Asnawi says meat animals infected with foot and mouth disease (PMK) can still be consumed.

He said meat infected with FMD can be consumed if it is cooked at a temperature of 95 degrees Celsius for 15 to 30 minutes.

“Meat that has been slaughtered from these animals can be consumed with a record of the process from cooking to boiling with a heat height of up to 95 degrees Celsius for a minimum of 15 minutes, a maximum of 30 minutes,” Asnawi said, quoted from CNBC TV, Wednesday (11/5).

Asnawi said animals infected with FMD experienced a number of symptoms, including fever reaching 39-41 degrees celsius, excessive mucus coming out of the mouth, canker sores on the oral cavity and tongue, loss of appetite, limping on the legs that made the nails fall off.

Meanwhile, he ensured that FMD was only transmitted to other animals and not to humans. Therefore, Asnawi advised the government to educate the public so as not to panic in the face of the FMD outbreak.

Previously, the Ministry of Agriculture said that the meat of animals infected with FMD could still be consumed in certain parts. However, the meat consumed must also pass certain inspection procedures.

“Meat that is affected by FMD, with certain procedures, with a technical approach of course, there are studies and others, can still be consumed by humans or is still safe for consumption,” said Minister of Agriculture Syahrul Yasin Limpo.

He said the parts to avoid are the viscera, mouth, lips and tongue. Outside of this section, it can still be consumed as long as it is not directly exposed to the virus.

“That should not only be in places that are directly affected by FMD, such as certain organs. For example, the leg, of course, must be amputated first,” concluded Syahrul.
