Fluminense’s Post-Club World Cup Decline: Losses Mount

by Alex Carter - Sports Editor

Fluminense is experiencing a notable downturn, having lost all four of their Brazilian Championship matches to date. This streak includes home defeats against cruzeiro (0-2), Flamengo (1-0), and Palmeiras (1-2), followed by a recent 3-1 loss to São Paulo.

The goals for Fluminense in their latest match were scored by Ecuadorian defender Robert Arboleda, Brazilian forward Ferreirinha, and new signing gonzalo Tapia. Despite Samuel Xavier scoring for Fluminense, it was not enough to secure a positive result.

Following the match, Fluminense’s right-back emphasized the need for the team to move past their recent struggles and focus on their upcoming game against Inter. He stated, “We have to turn the page quickly, a difficult game is coming against Inter. We have to stop making excuses and do our part on the field. We are Fluminense,a big team,we have to win.”

This current crisis is a stark contrast to Fluminense’s strong performance in the Club World Cup in the USA. In that tournament, they advanced from their group, which included Borussia Dortmund, Ulsan, and Mamelodi Sundowns. They then defeated Inter Milan in the round of 16 and Al-Hilal in the quarterfinals before losing 0-2 to eventual champions Chelsea in the semifinals.Since that tournament, the team has been on a losing streak.

Attention is now turning to the coaching position, with manager Renato Gaúcho facing increasing scrutiny. Fluminense has an prospect to improve their form when they face Internacional in Porto Alegre on Wednesday in the first leg of the Copa do Brasil round of 16.

The team will also host Grêmio at the Maracanã on saturday for their eighteenth league match. In mid-August, Fluminense is scheduled to play América de Cali in the Copa sudamericana round of 16.América de Cali recently eliminated another Brazilian team, Bahia, in the play-offs.
