hygiene and Adequate Sleep Key to Fighting Flu, Says Ankara Doctor
ANKARA – As seasonal transitions bring a surge in respiratory illnesses, an Ankara specialist is emphasizing the critical role of hygiene and sufficient sleep in preventing the flu. Assoc. Dr. Gülnur Kul, an infectious Diseases and clinical Microbiology Specialist at Ankara Etlik City Hospital, warns that the flu typically presents with high fever, muscle and joint pain, severe cough, and shortness of breath.
Dr. Kul explains that while common colds often manifest as weakness, upper respiratory tract infections, nasal discharge, and low-grade fever, the flu is a more serious illness. She highlights everyday objects like door handles, computer keyboards, and especially mobile phones as potential vectors for viruses, noting, “Phones are under our hands during the day. Hand hygiene without paying attention to the phone frequently enough spreads this virus.”
The doctor stresses that seasonal changes – particularly sudden temperature fluctuations – weaken the immune system and contribute to the rapid spread of infection in enclosed spaces. Though, she asserts that simple preventative measures offer a strong defense. “Dressing appropriately for weather changes, regular sleep,a balanced diet rich in vitamins from vegetables and fruits, practicing good hand hygiene, and ventilating closed environments are our strongest defense methods,” Dr. Kul stated.
She recommends at least seven hours of sleep per night, explaining that insufficient rest weakens immunity and reduces the body’s resistance to viruses. For those at higher risk, Dr. Kul also advocates for mask usage and annual flu vaccination, aligning with the Ministry of Health’s recommendations.
Dr. Kul advises those experiencing flu symptoms to drink plenty of fluids and seek medical attention if they develop high fever, shortness of breath, or a severe cough. She cautions against the unnecessary use of antibiotics, emphasizing that influenza is a viral infection and antibiotics are ineffective against viruses. Avoiding unnecessary antibiotic use is crucial in preventing antibiotic resistance.
