Florida shark attack: boy loses 70% blood and survives

When he was celebrating his birthday on August 7th, 15-year-old Lucas Cruz was the victim of a shark attack. The fish bit the boy in both legs, but he got away with it and is likely to make a full recovery. Lucas lost two thirds of his blood and his legs had to be straightened in four operations.

A shark attack for a birthday

Lucas spent his birthday with his family in the Florida Keys, an island chain off the US state of Florida. He was diving for lobsters when the shark attack occurred. At first he thought he was hit by a boat – but his family was a few meters away from him at the time. When the fish bit his legs, the boy’s family pulled him into the boat. At this point, Lucas believed he was going to lose his legs. He could only be saved with quick help and an emergency helicopter.

Bite marks down to the bones

Dr. Haaris Mir, a surgeon in Miami, was amazed at how deep the shark had bitten. “He had bite marks on his bones,” he told People Magazine. The shark had bitten Lucas’ right thigh and left lower leg. The muscles were “completely cut in half” by the shark attack.

Judging by the size of the tracks, it is possible to estimate the size of the shark. Accordingly, Lucas must have been attacked by a bull shark about three meters long. These fish are said to have particularly aggressive, unpredictable behavior. In all probability, however, this shark attack was not targeted. Often times, sharks bite into people because they mistakenly believe they are prey.
