This Saturday, governor of Florida, Ron DeSantis, announced a cooperation agreement between the state prisons and the migration authorities to detect undocumented migrants in the region.

Through the programa 287 (g), the Florida cops will be authorized to act as immigration agents. With this, it is expected to strengthen the detection of undocumented migrants in the country.

It should be noted that Florida is one of the states with the most migrant communities in the US. The fifth part of its inhabitants belongs to this sector of the population.

This does not prevent DeSantis from being a faithful follower of the anti-immigrant policies of the president Donald Trump. That is why, when announcing the measure, the governor was satisfied with the progress of immigration laws in Florida:

I am pleased that the implementation of this important program is progressing.

In fact, it is not the first time that the governor has issued an anti-immigrant measure. At the beginning of the year, his government promoted the implementation of sistema E-Verify. Through such a system, employers can verify the migratory status of its workers.

The agriculture and tourism sectors they opposed this measure, as many of their workers are undocumented migrants.

A new form of racism in Florida

Several pro migrant organizations They have already spoken out against DeSantis’ decision. One of them is the Florida Immigrant Coalition (FLIC, for its acronym in English).

Thomas Kennedy, the organization’s political director, told the Efe agency that the governor’s measure is part of “an ongoing effort to merge the mass incarceration system with the machinery for the detention / deportation of immigrants.”

He also assured that this system led by ICE agents it is a way of “profiting from the suffering” of migrant communities.

In the same way, he criticized that the Florida government is using money from taxpayers to implement these measures against undocumented migrants. He even said that this link between ICE and the state police it’s a new way of racism.

The organization United We Dream it also ruled on the matter. He denounced that “attacks on immigrants are increasingly extensive and violent.”

Both groups called for voters to mobilize and eliminate “the anti-immigrant politicians from Florida”.
