Floods in Bavaria: highest reporting level expected in Passau

The constant rain has partly in southern Bavaria severe flooding caused. After the precipitation in most areas has slowly slowed since Tuesday noon, the crests of the flood waves have reached the upper reaches of many smaller rivers. In the middle and lower reaches, water levels are expected to continue rising until Wednesday morning.

Sandbags to protect the old town in Passau

That also applies to the Lower Bavarian city of Passau. According to the status report of the city of Passau, the river levels continue to rise. The sections on the Danube, Isar and Ilz are affected.

In the old town of Passau, helpers have already distributed sandbags to protect the houses. There, the level of the Danube could reach alarm level 4 (Danube level 8.50 meters) in the early morning. The top of the town and the Fritz-Schäffer-Promenade are already closed.

Passauer should avoid flood areas

If the highest reporting level is reached, the B12 in Passau at Freyunger Straße and the B388 at Löwmühle must be closed to all traffic. The communication from the city states: “We therefore ask you to refrain from driving into the city of Passau along these routes or to bypass the area on a large scale.” Diversions would be signposted – city buses would also be diverted.

High water levels also in Upper Bavaria

The Upper Bavarian districts of Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Bad Tölz-Wolfratshausen and Mühldorf am Inn are also particularly affected by the flood. There is still a risk that built-up areas will be flooded. In Garmisch-Partenkirchen, registration level 3 applies to the Loisach at the Eschenlohe level, as does the Beuerberg level in the Bad Tölz-Wolfratshausen district. The same in the Mühldorf district at the Kraiburg inn level. The flood crest probably passes Kraiburg and Mühldorf before midnight.

In Rosenheim the Mangfall level has reached its peak and could fall below reporting level 3 before midnight. The lsar near Munich has also almost reached its apex at just below reporting level 3. In Landshut, the water level can continue to rise to reporting level 3 until tomorrow with the continuing wave.

Traffic jam and traffic delays on A8

On the A8 motorway there was still going towards Salzburg until late Tuesday evening long traffic jams. Because water has flooded the carriageway, there is only one lane between Irschenberg and Rosenheim. Alternative routes are also overloaded.

The A8 was blocked during the day between Bernau and Bergen and near Frasdorf: here the water was waist-high on the highway. There were significant disabilities for hours.

Travelers also made no progress on the rails. The Deutsche Bahn (DB) closed two railway lines south of Murnau due to the flood.

Hill slide in the Berchtesgadener Land

In the municipality of Anger in the Berchtesgadener Land, a completely soaked meadow slope had slipped – and severely damaged four semi-detached houses. As the police said, the ground has crushed windows and the masonry and almost completely spilled an extension. Nobody was injured, the residents were able to get to safety in time.

Midsummer replaces constant rain

After the constant rain, the weather situation should improve from Wednesday. Then it gets summery warm again with temperatures up to 30 degrees. Midsummer will be back next weekend – it stays dry at temperatures above 30 degrees.
