The passage of tropical storm Eta has caused damage in the US state of Florida. Streets were flooded, trees were uprooted and power cuts occurred in several places.

Eta made landfall on the Florida Keys late Sunday evening (Monday morning Belgian time), according to the US National Hurricane Center (NHC), with wind speeds of up to 100 kilometers per hour. The tropical storm is currently heading to the southeast of the Gulf of Mexico with wind speeds of up to 85 kilometers per hour. The storm will weaken further until Wednesday.

South of Florida and in the Keys, “one or two hurricanes can still form,” the NHC said. According to experts, Eta could move closer to the north coast of the Sunshine State by the end of the week.

Flood warnings are currently still in place in Miami, where images show trees uprooted and streets flooded after heavy rainfall. The authorities had called on residents in various places to leave their homes and seek safer shelter.

According to the Florida Power & Light energy company, tens of thousands of households are without electricity. The counties of Miami-Dade and Broward and the city of Palm Beach have been particularly affected.
