Penguins Bring Back Legend Fleury on PTO, Celebratory return Planned
PITTSBURGH, PA – In a move sure to electrify the city, the Pittsburgh Penguins announced today a professional tryout contract (PTO) with goaltender Marc-André Fleury, offering the three-time Stanley cup champion a chance to potentially finish his illustrious career where it began. The declaration was made by President of Hockey Operations and General Manager Kyle Dubas.
Fleury, 40, will participate in Penguins practice on Friday, September 26th at 12:00 PM, and is slated to appear in Saturday’s exhibition game against the Columbus Blue Jackets at 7:00 PM at PPG Paints arena.

Fleury enjoyed a remarkable 22-year NHL career from 2003-2025 with the Pittsburgh Penguins, Vegas golden Knights, Chicago Blackhawks, and Minnesota Wild. He amassed a record of 575-339-97 in 1,051 regular-season games, with 76 shutouts. Fleury boasts 15 seasons with 20 or more wins, nine with 30 or more, and two with 40 or more, trailing only Martin Brodeur in both regular-season games played and wins in NHL history.
The Sorel, Quebec native has been recognized with numerous individual accolades, including four NHL All-Star Game selections (2011, ’15, ’18, ’19), a Second-Team NHL All-Star nod (2021), the Vezina Trophy (2021) as the league’s best goaltender, and the William M. Jennings Trophy (2021) for fewest goals allowed.
Fleury’s longest and most celebrated tenure was with the Penguins, where he played 13 seasons (2003-2017).He holds nearly every major goaltending record in franchise history, including games played (691), wins (375), and shutouts (44). His 2.58 goals-against average is also a Penguins record, while his .912 save percentage ranks second among penguins goaltenders with at least 100 games played. In the playoffs, Fleury leads the Penguins in games played (115), wins (62), and shutouts (10).
During his time in Pittsburgh, Fleury was also a frequent recipient of team awards, including three Players’ Player Awards (2015, ’16, ’17), two Baz Bastien Memorial Awards – Good Guy Awards (2010, ’12), one Defensive Player of the Year Award (2012), two Edward J. Debartolo Community Service Awards (2006, ’14), four A.T. Caggiano Memorial Booster Club Awards (2011, ’13, ’14, ’15), one Masterton Nominee – Comeback Player (2017) and two team MVP Awards (2011, ’15).
Originally drafted first overall by the penguins in the 2003 NHL Draft, Fleury is one of only three goaltenders in NHL history to be selected with the first overall pick (Rick DiPietro – 2000, Michel Plasse – 1968).
