Fix: Chelsea keeper Mendy named world goalkeeper ahead of Neuer and Donnarumma

A small surprise in the vote for the best goalkeeper of the year: Neither European champion Gianluigi Donnarumma nor Bayern keeper Manuel Neuer were voted best goalkeeper of the year 2021 by FIFA on Monday evening. The prize went to Edouard Mendy, goalkeeper at Chelsea. This was announced by FIFA during the “The Best FIFA Football Award” ceremony on Monday evening. Mendy won the Champions League with Chelsea last year.

The 29-year-old switched from Stade Rennes to the Premier League for 24 million euros in the summer of 2020 and has made 70 competitive appearances for the Londoners so far. His contract with coach Thomas Tuchel’s club runs until 2025. Mendy was surprisingly awarded before Donnarumma, who celebrated the greatest success of his career in the summer and became European champion with the Italian national team. After the tournament he was voted the best player of the European Championship. Bayern keeper Neuer also went away empty-handed despite the German championship and a good year with Munich.

When voting for the world goalkeeper, the votes of fans, national coaches, national team captains and journalists were equally divided (25 percent each) in the result.

Christiane Endler becomes world goalkeeper

The Chilean Christiane Endler, who switched from Paris Saint-Germain to Olympique Lyon in the summer, prevailed among the women. The German representative Ann-Katrin Berger (FC Chelsea) and Stephanie Lynn Marie Labbé (Canada/FC Rosengard/Paris Saint-Germain) remained without a title.
