Five Special Symptoms of Cancer That Cannot Be Ignored

Experts say there are some typical symptoms to watch out for.

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, TANGERANG – Cancer is not the only modern disease. The American Cancer Society says humans have suffered from cancer throughout recorded history.

Some of the earliest evidence of cancer was found among fossilized bone tumors, human mummies in Ancient Egypt, and ancient manuscripts. So, actually not only modern humans and urban communities affected by cancer.

Reported on the page Times Now News, Sunday (16/1/2022), experts say, some wrong lifestyle does increase one’s chances of developing carcinogen that trigger cancer. However, apart from that, you should also be aware that there are now tests and tools to detect the onset of cancer early.

Experts say there are some typical symptoms to watch out for. The earlier you know the presence of cancer, the better the prognosis. Johns Hopkins Medicine lists at least five signs and symptoms to look out for, but also warns that having any one symptom doesn’t necessarily mean you have cancer.

1. Unexplained weight loss

Weight loss is common in cancer patients. This may be the first visible sign of disease.

Cancer.net (USA) said 40 percent of people said they had weight loss unexplained when they were first diagnosed with cancer. Doctors refer to a weight loss syndrome called cachexia characterized by increased metabolism, loss of skeletal muscle, fatigue, loss of appetite, and decreased quality of life.

2. Fatigue

A Johns Hopkins Medicine report says that latent cancer fatigue isn’t quite the same as how you feel after a long day of work or play. Extreme fatigue that doesn’t improve with rest can be an early sign of cancer.

According to a charity called Cancer Research UK, difficulty getting up in the morning is often a sign of fatigue. Cancer uses your body’s nutrients to grow and develop, so they no longer fill your body.

The Johns Hopkins report says this “nutrition theft” can leave you feeling very tired. But just because you’re tired doesn’t mean you have cancer. There are many underlying causes of fatigue, many of which are not cancer-related. If your symptoms are severe enough to affect your quality of life, call your doctor.

3. Fever

Fever can be a common symptom of colds and flu, and goes away on its own. But if the fever has a cancer link, there are certain signs you should watch out for. Among them, does the fever recur for no apparent reason? Do you often have a fever at night? You have no other signs of infection. So what causes fever? Do you sweat at night?

4. Pain

According to WebMD, certain types of cancer manifest themselves with pain. Bone cancer, for example, is often painful from the start. Some brain tumors cause headaches that last for days and do not improve with treatment. Pain can also be a late sign of cancer, so see a doctor if you don’t know why it’s happening or isn’t going away.

But not all unexplained pain is a cancer warning. The Johns Hopkins report says pain is another symptom that can be caused by many health problems, most of which are not cancer. If you experience pain that doesn’t go away and you’re not sure where it’s coming from, your doctor can help with the next best steps.

5. Skin changes

Our skin is the largest organ of the body and can be a window to overall health. Ask your doctor to look for any unusual or new moles, lumps, or marks on your body to make sure skin cancer is not lurking.

Jaundice (yellowing of the eyes or fingertips) is one of the symptoms that can indicate a possible infection or cancer. Changes in moles can also be a cause for concern. Spots that bleed and don’t go away are also signs of skin cancer. Oral cancer can start as sores in your mouth.

Other signs to look out for include a cough or hoarse voice that doesn’t go away, as well as unusual bleeding.
