Five cheap engines that can easily cover 500,000+ km

These are very simple constructive and therefore reliable and durable car engines, which are also economical and cheap to maintain.

Half a million kilometers are 12 trips, traveling around the world along the equator. That’s exactly what the Za Rulem experts say that cars with engines can go without major repairs. At the same time, they are installed in inexpensive cars that many of us can afford to buy.

This engine has a cast iron cylinder block, sparing horsepower, hydraulic lifters and a very simple design. With timely care in accordance with the manufacturer’s recommendations, you can easily travel around the Earth more than a dozen times.

We are talking about a 1.6-liter K4M engine with 102-105 horsepower. You can find this power unit on five models: Renault Logan, Sandero and Duster, as well as Lada Largus and Nissan Almera.

Its older brother is a 2-liter F4R engine with 135-143 hp, which is installed on three crossovers – Renault Duster, Kaptur and Nissan Terrano.

Due to the aluminum cylinder block, the G4FA (1.4 l, 107 hp) and G4FC (1.6 l, 123 hp) engines are not as unpretentious as Renault’s engines. They are more difficult to maintain (for example, valve adjustment is required), but if these units are not overloaded with dynamic acceleration, driving a trailer or overloaded trunk, they will travel half a million kilometers, despite the manufacturer’s declared resource of 180 thousand kilometers.

It is important to know that these engines are only durable on the lighter Kia Rio and Hyundai Solaris models. A large mass of cars like the Kia Ceed, Hyundai i30 or Sreta will finish them much earlier.

Volkswagen

This is perhaps the last indestructible engine of the German concern. Its advantage is cast iron sleeves inside a lightweight aluminum block. Now we are talking about the eight-valve BSE 1.6 MPI engine. The power of the unit is only 102 hp, which also saves its life. Another plus are the hydraulic compensators in the cylinder head. Add to that ease of maintenance (even the timing belt can be replaced by yourself) and you have the perfect powertrain.

The only problem is that this engine was discontinued in 2015 and you can only find it on cars that are at least 6 years old. If that doesn’t stop you, take a look at the second generation Skoda Octavia, the fifth and sixth generation Golf, as well as the fifth generation Jetta and B6 Passat.

Honda

This Japanese manufacturer has always been known for its highly boosted engines for cars and motorcycles. But in the engine range of the brand there is a much more popular two-liter gasoline naturally aspirated engine R20A. It has been produced since 2006 and is installed on the Civic, Accord and CR-V crossover models. The engine has an aluminum cylinder block, in some variants the power reaches 155 horsepower. However, its resource can be at least 500,000 kilometers. This is a single camshaft motor that is driven by a chain. The i-VTEC system is responsible for phase control. But there are no hydraulic jacks and you have to adjust the valve clearances every 80,000 km.

The TU5JP4 engine, also referred to as the NFU, has a displacement of 1.6 liters. This engine has a cast iron cylinder block, timing belt drive and hydraulic valve clearance compensators. A valve control phase was later added. The engine then received an EC5 index. The engine provides 90 to 115 horsepower.

This power unit is installed on the Peugeot 206, 307, 408, Partner and Citroen C4 models, as well as on the C-Elysee. Its reliability is due to simple technical solutions and low degree of forcing. The routine support for timing belt replacement should not be overlooked. And something more about butter. The instructions for some of the vehicle models listed above advise you to change it every 20,000 km. But you better do this simple procedure every 10,000 km and the engine will not let you down. With proper care and frequent oil changes, the service life will exceed 400,000 kilometers.
