Fitzgibbon more worried about the closure of the port than the pandemic

The Minister of the Economy, Pierre Fitzgibbon, said he was more concerned about the consequences of the closure of the port of Montreal than the effects of the pandemic, Thursday in parliamentary committee.

“I am, I think, more worried about the closure of the port than about the pandemic. The Port of Montreal is the nerve center of Quebec, ”said the Minister of the Economy, Pierre Fitzgibbon to a question from Carlos Leitao, official opposition spokesperson for the economy.

The minister said he had several discussions with the federal government. He said his colleague at the Ministry of Labor, Jean Boulet, is on the file.

“It is clear that we cannot let this war continue,” added government minister Legault.

For Carlos Leitao, the reputation of the Port of Montreal is even at risk in the longer term.

“It may be that a good part of the volume of business will not return,” he said in turn.

Remember that nearly half of Canadian small and medium-sized businesses are asking Ottawa to put an end to the conflict that is paralyzing the Port of Montreal, according to a recent survey.

An online survey by the Canadian Federation of Independent Business (CFIB) indicates that SMEs, already weakened by COVID-19, are hard hit by the longshoreman strike.

Further details will follow.
