Fitwalking, the ideal sports walk against diabetes – Corriere.it

Walking is the most natural gesture there is, but if you learn to do it well it becomes a valuable ally for the health of people with diabetes: fitwalking is something more than a simple walk and therefore within the project Cities Changing Diabetes the courses held by two multi-champions, the walkers, were born Maurizio and Giorgio Damilano, together with the Associations of People with Diabetes. The first courses are taking place in Milan, Rome, Bologna, Turin, Bari, Marche and Calabria; the goal is to train patients who are experts in fitwalking who can then spread the technique.

The health walk

Indeed, fitwalking a sporty walk, not a simple walk, as Maurizio Damilano explains: It is not enough to walk to make the most of the walk, trekking, sport, cultural and tourist tour or health activity, but it is necessary to walk well, that is with correct movement mechanics, acquired by knowing and practicing the fitwalking technique. A simple but essential technique for transforming normal walking into a sports motor activity and suitable for everyone. In practice, an enhanced walk, in which many muscle groups come into play giving the many benefits of aerobic movement, now well known: the reduction of fat mass, especially the most dangerous one that accumulates on the abdomen, increased insulin sensitivity, the reduction of blood pressure, glycated hemoglobin, bad LDL cholesterol, triglycerides. The overall results of these effects are a reduction in mortality from cardiovascular causes, between 30 and 60 percent, and the decline in mortality in general.

Project for healthier cities

Hence the idea of a course intended for people identified by diabetic associations to train, by certifying their skills, the figure of the patient expert in fitwalking who can then spread the discipline to all the others. Observe Salvatore Endrio Oleandri, director of the Department of Endocrinology and Metabolic Diseases, ASL City of Turin: Brisk walking or fitwalking, in association with any therapies and a correct diet, ideal for people with diabetes and offers benefits regardless of the age of the patient and the duration of the disease: in fact, an activity that, if properly modulated, it can be practiced by everyone without contraindications. A constant sporting practice allows a better quality of life and often also a reduction in medications. Walking is also one of the activities that the cities participating in the international project Cities Changing Diabetes they are committed to promoting to eradicate urban diabetes: today 65 percent of patients live in cities, but the way they are designed greatly influences the lifestyles of the inhabitants and therefore also their risk of getting sick. The Italian cities in the field to fight diabetes are on the rise: the mayors of Milan, Rome, Bari, Bologna, Genoa and Turin have just signed theUrban Diabetes Declaration, a commitment to accelerate the prevention of type 2 diabetes and its complications in their cities, for example favoring the possibility of practicing an activity such as fitwalking in urban spaces.
