first weekend without shooting since 1993

The financial capital of the United States has seen its number of shootings decline. According to the latest figures from October 7, 600 people have been caught in crossfire since the start of the year.

For the first time ever, the sounds of guns did not frighten the inhabitants of the city that never sleeps. “We spent Friday, Saturday, Sunday without any shootings or homicides. This is the first time in decades and it is something that not only New York police but all New Yorkers can be proud of, ”said James O’Neill, head of the NYPD, during a briefing. Press.

The last weekend without any shootings was in 1993, according to police in the city of 8.5 million people. In his post since 1982, Terence Monahan, head of the NYPD department, told the New York Post : “I really don’t remember a weekend when no one was shot in the whole town … It’s a different town.”

On Twitter, he praised the New York agents: “The fact that there were no shootings in NYC last weekend is remarkable. The last record dates back to 25 years ago. The city has come a long way since then and it is thanks to the hard work of New York agents. I thank them! ”

This parenthesis, welcomed by Democratic Mayor Bill de Blasio, began at midday on Thursday, after a man driving a black Nissan shot and wounded another at around 11:37 local time (3:37 p.m. GMT) in the Canarsie neighborhood in Brooklyn, before fleeing, said another official, Terence Monahan, daily The Daily News. It ended at 1:15 p.m. on Monday, when a 27-year-old man was shot in the foot in the Bronx.

The number of shootings on the decline

The number of shootings is on the decline in the American financial capital. As of October 7, some 600 people had been caught in a shootout since the start of the year, down 1.1% from the same period in 2017.

But this slight decrease does not prevent peaks. The weekend of October 6 and 7 had been “terrible”, with several shootings in Brooklyn and the Bronx, said Terence Monahan, without giving specific figures.

On the other hand, the number of murders is on the rise again this year, whereas it had been declining since the 1950s. In 2017, the authorities had recorded 292 murders, a record. In the first half of 2018, the city recorded 147 murders, an 8% increase from the same period of 2017, mostly concentrated in a few neighborhoods in Brooklyn and the Bronx.
