How sexist can the German Schlager be? The city of Würzburg has a clear answer: not at all. That’s why “Layla” will not be played at the Spring Folk Festival in 2023 either.

Würzburg – After “Layla” was banned at two German folk festivals because of its sexist lyrics, the hit song literally shot through the roof and even became the hit of the year. After concerts, at the Oktoberfest, in the football stadium: everywhere people sang about “Puffmama Layla”. But the city of Würzburg is still sticking to it: “Layla” will not be played at the 2023 Spring Folk Festival either.

Hit “Layla” banned again at the first folk festival

“Layla” divides the country: some think it’s right that sexist texts aren’t given a platform, others talk about censorship and continue to bawl along with the text. Whichever camp you belong to, you have to acknowledge that the hit song by DJ Robin & Schürze was the hit of the year in 2022 despite – or perhaps because of – the headwind. Now the city of Würzburg is giving us a déjà vu.

Because this year, at the spring folk festival, “any kind of songs with racist or sexist content will not be played,” the operator told the Main Post. Means: Würzburg will also be banned from “Layla” in 2023. And the marquee operator already has a plan for that. As soon as the “unwanted song” is started, the musicians should “lead over to another music”.

Songs at least as bad as “Layla”.

“Layla” singer DJ Robin hopes for renewed success after being banned

The colleagues from schlager.de asked DJ Robin what he thought of the renewed “Layla” ban, but this year the pop singer is relatively calm. “I hope that we will have a successful year again because of the renewed ban,” reveals DJ Robin. “In my opinion, artistic freedom should prevail in Germany. Citizens should be empowered enough to decide for themselves which songs they want to hear and which they don’t.”

Things are not going well for the Wendlers either. The scratched image of her husband Michael has now again been fatal for Laura Müller, because a lucrative advertising deal has now burst. Sources used: Main Post, schlager.de
