First defeat after 14 games: Frankfurt ends the Union Berlin series

From: 01/10/2022 19:58

Eintracht Frankfurt inflicted their first Bundesliga defeat of the season on leaders Union Berlin and are moving up the table.

Eintracht Frankfurt beat Union Berlin 2-0 on matchday 8 of the Bundesliga on Saturday (01/10/2022) to hand the leaders their first defeat after 14 league games all season.

Mario Götze rewarded Eintracht for a good start with an early goal (12′). Jesper Lindström added the second goal three minutes before the break. Randal Kolo Muani, until then the most prominent man in Frankfurt’s offensive, had to leave the field in the 68th minute for the Giallorossi. However, the Union failed to turn the majority into something countable and deservedly suffered their first defeat of the season.

The Köpenickers’ successful run ended with Eintracht, who had been so weak at home last time out, and had won just two of their thirteen home games in 2022. With the win, Frankfurt (14 points) moved up initially in fifth place, just three points off the top of the standings. Despite the bankruptcy, Union remain top of the table, ahead of SC Freiburg, who have the same number of points.

Götze caught the Union cold

With the extension with coach Urs Fischer, Union had given another positive sign on Wednesday. In the first game under a new contract, the Swiss made two changes, compared to the win against VfL Wolfsburg (2-0) Paul Jaeckel and Morten Thorsby entered the team.

In front of 50,500 fans, however, the guests got off to a bad start. After a controlled start, the Berliners were caught cold, Götze immediately completing Eintracht’s first attack after preliminary work by Kolo Muani, who had previously left all opponents standing.

Union pallid – Lindström scores after a dream solo

The Union struggled with the deficit, the dreaded switch game just came to light: Fischer could not be satisfied. Coach Oliver Glasner’s team continued to make a strong and confident impression, but failed to double through Luca Pellegrini (22′). Apart from a long-range shot (28th) by Janik Haberer, Fischer’s team had paled before the break and deservedly fell behind.

Frankfurt, on the other hand, continued to invent something offensive: Pellegrini (36′) first hit the crossbar before Lindström crowned a fantastic solo run with a two-goal lead. Union became more active in the second round, but Fischer’s eleven rarely found themselves in dangerous situations due to the disciplined Frankfurt squad. After one of the few good attacks, SGE goalkeeper Kevin Trapp saved against Haberer, Niko Gießelmann put the edge on it (55th).

Fischer fought back and brought in Sven Michel, Paul Seguin and Kevin Behrens for more offensive power in the closing stages. But even after Kolo Muani’s dismissal, the Berliners remained unimaginative in attack. Frankfurt, on the other hand, repeatedly provided relief with counterattacks.

The only bad news from Frankfurt’s point of view was the injury of top scorer Götze, who had to leave the field after just over an hour. Head coach Oliver Glasner gave the all-clear after the match: “It’s a bit convoluted, but I expect you to be back by Tuesday.”

Frankfurt in the premier class against Tottenham, Union in the Europa League at Malmö

Then Eintracht must prove themselves in the Champions League with a home match against Tottenham (21:00). For Union, things will initially continue at international level, in an away game in the Europa League against Malmö FF (Thursday, 18:45).

In the league, Frankfurt plays Bochum away for the next points (Saturday, October 8, 2022 at 15:30). Union Berlin travels to Stuttgart the next day (7.30pm).
